What is Echotherapy or Echo Wellness and how can it be created within your home?
Echotherapy describes the therapeutic benefits that come from communing with nature. Most people can find some “Green Space” in even urban environments. Others can take advantage of some “Blue Space” found in natural preserves or near large bodies of water. Studies have shown that there are great psychological and physical benefits to taking advantage of using these resources as a natural remedy for de-stressing and improving brain function. But what if you do not have access to either? There is a solution…
How can we create “Nature’s MindSpace” inside a portion of our home?
Example 1. Inside your home: Place a comfy chair next to a window that looks out into some greenery—a tree, a bush, a yard. If possible, put a bird feeder somewhere visible. If you do not have any green space to look on to, could you put some hanging plants in that window or some on the window sill? Could you install a window box outside that window to have some greenery to enjoy and take care of? Find a small surface next to the chair or use the window sill to sit your beverage cup and whatever makes you feel relaxed that does NOT involve media. This can be a great space to do some needlework. This small change to your environment can be a safe haven and give you some “Peace of Mind” for the time you spend there. It is recommended to spend at least 15-30 minutes there each day just relaxing and looking a nature, while doing something that does not involve media and having a soothing beverage. Picture yourself there…now “Create MindSpace”.
Example 2. The use of a balcony: Place a small but comfortable chair facing the direction of a view that will provide a view of some green space and/or privacy. Now think about what plants make you feel calm. Consider how much sun exposure this area gets per day. Do you like flowering plants? If so, consider balcony rail planters because flowering plants usually need more sun. Some small trees can be grown in large balcony containers but usually need to be close to the railing for more sun exposure. There are some hardy tropical plants that can line the sides and wall of your space. Some people love to grow vines to wrap around the railing that could provide a home for small birds. The type of plants you choose must be carefully considered, so the environment is conducive for their health and happyiness. It is best to ask someone at your local garden center for suggestions. Tell them what you are trying to accomplish and ask about native and hardy plants. It is always nice to hang a bird feeder if allowed; however, it can be a little messy at times. Some love the sound of soft windchimes…Test the sound before you buy them so that they are pleasant to your ears and spirit. It might be nice to add a water feature, such as a table fountain or, if space allows, a narrow but tall decorative fountain. Some enjoy hanging some outdoor art. Make this space your own and you will desire to take a respite there.
We hope that both suggestions help you to create a peaceful and healing space in your home called “Nature’s Mindspace”.
